“Pets have a way of finding the people who need them, then a bond is created that even in death can never be broken.” — Anonymous
According to a survey conducted by the American Pet Products Association (APPA), approximately 85 million families own at least one pet, or close to 70%. This number was up from the original survey amount of 56% of U.S. households back in 1988. The very first National Pet Owner Survey was conducted in 1988 by the APPA. The most recent survey was conducted for the 2019-2020 year again by the APPA.
So 42.7% of these households have cats, and 63.4% have dogs. We’re sure some have both, but they did not give those numbers. The point we are trying to make is that when it comes to branding your pet products, you need first think about pets and everything associated with them as a lifestyle.
So what does this mean for you as the business owner? This means you need to consider certain activities, dilemmas, and tasks that pet owners are confronted with. How does your product or service fit in to make life better?
Here is a little statistic from Petpedia. In 2020, the estimated pet product expenditure in the U.S. reached $99 billion. We definitely spend a lot of money on our pets!
Part of your pet product branding needs to be expressed through your social media presence, and that presence must have an impact, be thoughtful, and constantly adhere to the same principles that you established initially when you started your business.
Pets have become part of the family and are just as important as human children. In some cases, the heads of the household have opted to have pets instead of children. There have been scientific studies about how a mother reacts to both her child and dog regarding brain waves. Here are the results of the scientific study in an abstract.
When establishing your pet product branding, you need to have the same mindset as you would for any family member because the big message is that our pets are our family. Those of us who have children know that we can’t just go on vacation without considering where we are going and if it is okay for our kids to go. Will they allow kids? It is the same situation for those of us with pets.
Your pet product branding needs to be synonymous with product branding for members of your family. The bottom line is that our pets are family, and the sooner your pet product branding takes on that mindset, the more successful your business will be.
