It’s not a secret that natural food products are gaining popularity. Better said is that the popularity never left, but was centered around a subculture of health-conscious individuals. Buying local and organic have contributed to the rising sales of produce. In 2020, industry sales of organic and non-organic natural food products increased a whopping 12.4%, which amounts to $61.9 billion, according to the Organic Trade Association (OTA).

With more people turning to a plant-based diet, we have seen a rise in the interest in purchasing these types of foods. Nuts, seeds, oils, whole grains, beans, and legumes have made their way into nearly every household globally. Another reason that these foods are becoming more popular is that more people are swearing off additives, which can bring on many health issues. Remember flavor enhancers such as MSG (Monosodium Glutamate) from Chinese food of the past? MSG is more than one hundred years old and makes food tastier, but some people have experienced adverse effects.

Due to an influx of wheat allergies, there has also been a considerable rise in the use of alternative flours. All wheat contains gluten, so stay away from wheat if you’re allergic to gluten. These alternative flours include amaranth, buckwheat, banana, chickpea, millet, oat, and tapioca. Even a slight gluten intolerance can make some people’s system awry.

The recent 2022 Natural Products Expo West in Anaheim that ran March 7-11 confirmed how strong the natural food products market is and how it is here to stay. Our beautiful planet and our continued health depend on it.
